Jennifer Bradley, a science teacher at Bentonville High School in Arkansas, told us, “I started to see my students get much better at using evidence in their writing. Teachers in all sorts of settings have told us how powerful this feature is for engaging students - getting them to look closely, back up their observations with evidence and weigh what their peers are noticing. And thousands upon thousands have, from all over the country and around the world. With that foundation, we invited classrooms and students to join the conversation.

It also has "Learning on the Loo," which helps enlighten enthroned employees about other aspects of the company. Since at least as early as 2006, the $905 billion tech behemoth has published "Testing on the Toilet," a one-pager that gives engineering advice to fellow employees. In a world where smartphones and instant messages have made working off-hours from a bus or a bed seem normal, business reading in the washroom may be the next tech industry innovation coming soon to an office near you. The practice is the latest, and perhaps most intrusive, example of how Silicon Valley's quest for relentless productivity and its yen for rulebreaking are reshaping how we think of the boundaries between business and personal duties. It sounds like something from a script of the satirical "Silicon Valley" TV show on HBO, but the bathroom work reading is as unsurprising a sight at many tech companies today as ping-pong tables or a barista. Silicon Valley's efficiency-obsessed tech giants are increasingly turning to the final frontier to reach their employees: the toilet.Ĭompanies like Facebook, Google, and Yelp are all sticking up newsletters, memos, workplace training drills and other important messages for their workforce on the walls of toilet stalls, ensuring workers can learn more about the business while they do their business. Keep in mind though, there's not a lot of room in any of these pieces.Īpidura has been a significant player in the rise of bikepacking, from sponsoring events like the Transcontinental Race to supporting some of the biggest names in endurance riding like Sofiane Sehili and Jenny Graham who make huge demands of their equipment. It also makes sense because that's what Apidura has a reputation for. The race series is where we've had the most experience and with that in mind, that's what we are sharing on this list. For ultra-distance and audaxers, the Race series and Expedition range use many of the same features but the race series is the most focused and streamlined. The Backcountry series is for off-road adventures and offers a more rugged finish for better durability. The problem is mainly our lack of spiritual development. “Our repeated experience of frustration, dissatisfaction and misery does not have external conditions as its root cause. – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p33 “We wish to avoid suffering, but because our minds are not cultivated in wisdom we run directly towards suffering like a moth caught in the light of a flame.” – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p32-33 Control over one’s future evolution is to be won during one’s life, not at the time of death.” Everything that confronts them is unknown, for they never took the time to apply the methods that reveal the nature of mind, birth, life and death. Having passed their entire lives ignoring death and sheltering themselves from thoughts of it, when it strikes they become utterly shocked and lose all courage and confidence. “Death holds very little hope for ordinary worldly person with no spiritual experience. – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p32 “They who possess spiritual understanding can control their destiny at the time of death, but for ordinary beings the process is very much an automatic chain reaction of karmic seeds and habitual psychic response patterns.” The Dalai Lama was officially recognized at the age of four There is no need to enter the after-death state empty-handed.” “If one cultivates spiritual qualities such as mental harmony, humility, non-attachment, patience, love, compassion, wisdom and intelligence able to deal effectively with the problems of this life and because the wealth that one is amassing is mental rather than material, it will not have to be left behind at death. “Although it is essential to maintain a reasonable material basis on which to live, the emphasis in one’s life should be on cultivating the mental and spiritual causes of happiness.” “To ignore death and its implications will not prevent us from dying nor will it help us to enter the after-death state with any degree of spiritual maturity.” – The Dalia Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p31 “A materialistic mind is an unstable mind, for its happiness is built on transient, physical circumstances.” – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p31 “The difficulty with a purely materialistic interpretation of life is that, in addition to ignoring an entire dimension of the mind, it does not deal effectively with the problems of this life.” – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p30 “The deepest impulse of all sentient beings is to experience happiness and to avoid suffering.” – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p26 “Although all humans are equal, each of us has our individual background our unique way of seeing and appreciating things, our own spiritual and philosophical tastes.” – The Dalai Lama, The Path to Enlightenment, p25 “After attaining enlightenment he turned the Wheel of Dharma for beings of good fortune, revealing what must be overcome and what must be accomplished in order to transcend the stages and levels leading to higher rebirth, liberation and omniscient perfection.” These balls will be held close so that the players learn to jump close together without coming down on each others toes.
Learn to live without some of your wants. Spending Responsiblyĭon’t spend what you don’t have. Once they (or you) are ready, you can even open an investment account for them, which will benefit from even more years of growth. Older children can start learning about the value of investing long before they’re ready to build their first portfolio. Whether you simply want your child to set aside a portion of their earnings each month or they want to buy a pricey toy, lessons that involve savings make it easier. Many of these money apps can help drive those lessons home. I regularly work with my 8-year-old to teach him the difference between short- and long-term savings and develop the patience required for each. (Many adults could stand a refresher on that last one, too, if we’re being honest.) Saving This means knowing where they stand financially, what they can afford to spend, planning for big expenses in advance, and learning how to say no. Whether 6, 16, or 26, it’s important that your children learn how to budget. Some make it easy to automate funds on a weekly or monthly basis while others allow you to assign tasks that your children can check off once complete. Managing Allowance and Choresĭo you want to give your child a regular allowance? What about offering money in exchange for household chores and tasks? However, regardless of how old your children are or how long they’ve been learning about finances, there are a few specific areas of focus to consider when browsing apps. The financial app(s) you choose will vary depending on your child’s age and experience with money. (Personal Capital is now Empower) Key Lessons Now, if you’re considering a money app for your child, teen, or young adult, below are a few of our favorites. It’s free and has a ton of features to help you get your financial life in order. One of our favorite tools for adults to use to track their finances is Empower. These apps allow parents to pay their children for chores or allowance, track their spending, teach them about saving and budgeting, and even guide them into their first investments. Parents today have the opportunity to do so much more for their kids’ future, and they have the incredible tools - like money apps and platforms to help them do it. We didn’t have much financial education in school, either, with only a few days dedicated to things like writing a check and calculating interest. Unfortunately, most of these were learned by watching my parents make bad decisions that I was determined not to repeat. I grew up learning many financial lessons from my parents. This one feeds off the power of the PlayStation 5. The PSVR 2 is Sony’s latest attempt at a virtual reality setup for its PlayStation consoles. PlayStation VR 2 Photo: Matt Leone/Polygon Index kits purchased through GameStop do not include a free game. The full Valve Index VR Kit includes the headset, two controllers, two base stations, and a download code for Half-Life: Alyx. Fun fact: The base stations for the HTC Vive can work with the Index, too, if you have those laying around. However, only one of them is required to use the Index at all (two will improve the tracking). You’ll need permanent (or semi-permanent) spots in your room for the base stations to be mounted, so the Index won’t be for everyone. Photo: James Bareham/PolygonĪiding the Index with its excellent tracking are external base stations that map your room to create a stage for your VR escapades. Simply put, games can receive input data when you move any finger, not just your index finger and thumb. It’s a small feature that adds more immersion in certain games, like Half-Life: Alyx. The Valve Index includes revolutionary “knuckles” controllers, which, unlike with the other headsets on this list, feature full finger tracking. It’s easy to adjust the strap settings, and it fits snug without feeling like all of the weight is pulling down on my head. Plus, the Index is one of the most comfortable headsets out there. You have the ability to flip them up and down at will. Some glasses will fit inside of the Valve Index, but alternatively, prescription lenses are available from a variety of companies, including Hons VR, VR Optician, and VR Wave.Īnother unique aspect of the Index’s design are its built-in headphones that sit off the ear so that you can maintain a sense of physical presence (they sound surprisingly good, too). You also have the opportunity to push the limits with an experimental 144 Hz mode, a refresh rate that leads the industry. The Index’s 1440x1600 resolution lenses offer a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz in normal play. Most of the components include SteamVR’s killer app, Half-Life: Alyx, for free with your purchase. Getting the entire kit is costly at $999, though Valve (the maker of the Steam Deck and developer of Half-Life, Portal, and more) sells some components piecemeal for less. The Valve Index is the current flagship virtual reality headset, offering the most comfortable design, the highest specs, and the most interesting controller features of any wired PC VR headset. Wired headsets that require pricey base stations to track you for roomscale VR games are on the decline, but they’re used by our favorite PC headset, the Valve Index. What you gain by being physically connected includes vastly better graphics and not having to worry about battery life. Many wired headsets offer similar tracking features as wireless options, but they keep you tethered to your console or PC by a long wire. The major trade-off with these headsets is performance, which is trumped by wired headsets. Plus, these headsets utilize the cameras to act as safeguards while you’re in VR, telling you when you’re close to leaving your play area. For one, they track the headset’s movement in your space, letting you feel like your body is truly immersed in a virtual world. The headsets feature cameras that are useful for multiple reasons. Some virtual reality headsets are wireless and allow what’s commonly referred to as “roomscale” VR experiences without the need for additional accessories. The major VR headset differences to know about We’ll revisit this post to make sure it includes all of the info you need to know about the newer hardware. Note: With the Meta Quest 3 arriving in September and Apple’s wildly priced Vision Pro headset due to make a splash in 2024, it’s clear that tech giants are still betting on the virtual reality space, and some compelling technological leaps are on their way soon. With our experience testing out all of the most popular models, plus some tips on how to buy the right one for your needs, we aim to make it easier so you can jump into a variety of fantastical worlds. Do you need a headset with swappable straps, one that can be configured with prescription lenses, and one that’s less than $500? Do you eventually want to build your own VR cockpit for flight simulators? These are all things that might influence which one you buy.įor newcomers, deciding on a headset can seem confusing, but don’t lose hope. There are other comfort, accessibility, and budgetary reasons you might choose one over the other as well. The major players in VR gaming - it currently boils down to Sony, Valve, and Meta - each boast some games and features that are exclusive to their respective headsets. Similar as they seem, they’re different in ways that may matter to you. Picking a virtual reality headset is a bit like buying a console - that is, one that you wear on your face. Say, for example, you want to insert a page after page number 2, specify them in this box to insert the page. This opens up a dialog box wherein you can specify exactly how many pages you want to insert and where you want them to be inserted. If you want to insert more than 1 page in the document, click the Insert Pages⦠command in the menu. Clicking the menu button on the Pages panel opens up a menu, which allows you to have more control over page management. You can also make use of some more options to work with pages. You can also select multiple pages by pressing Ctrl on Windows or Command on Mac and selecting the desired pages. You can create pages and re-arrange them simply by dragging and dropping them as desired within the Pages panel. The third button is called Delete selected pages and allows you to delete the selected pages. This allows you to create a page right next to the page currently selected in the Pages panel. The second button is called Create new page. This lets you change the dimensions of the page, say from A4 to US Letter or A3. The first button is called Edit page size. The bottom of the Pages panel has three buttons. Let us explore some of the options available in this panel. Clicking the Pages button on the Panel Bar opens the flyout showing various options that are possible with this document. We see that this document has two pages in two spreads. However, we will use the Pages panel in the Panel Bar as it is much easier and intuitive. Most of these functions are accessed from the Pages menu under the Layout main menu. InDesign provides a lot of easy ways to insert, remove, or duplicate pages. Page management is important if you are dealing with a document having multiple pages. Once we had downloaded the app, pairing with a smartphone was straightforward and we were linked within a minute. This means that if you want to use the monitor around the house you don’t have to have your phone switched on, or you can have the parent unit on for the babysitter and check in on your baby via your smartphone while you’re out having dinner with friends. What we like most about it is that you can link it to both the 5in portable parent unit that comes with a colour screen and HD audio, and the dedicated BT Smart Controls app, which lets you keep an eye on your baby via a smartphone or tablet. While the BT Smart Baby Monitor (from £149) isn’t the prettiest design in our test, it’s a great value all-rounder with some really useful features, which is enough to take our top spot. To do this we shook a rattle in the upstairs nursery and timed how long it took for the monitor to pick up a noise on its smartphone app, positioned in the downstairs kitchen. Over the course of some rather sleepless months and with the help of three-month-old Marnie, we tested the devices on their audio and visual quality, night-vision, added extras, app features and flexibility.Ī good baby monitor needs to be sharp and alert you to the slightest fuss or cry from your baby, so we also measured response times. To find out which smart baby monitor offers the best features, we've tested ten of the latest designs. This makes it easy for you to check in on your baby when you’ve left them with a sitter, and view them on the camera feed in real-time – hopefully sleeping soundly in their cot. The latest devices can be used to keep an eye on your baby from your smartphone or tablet anywhere in your home, but also when you’re out. Once the nappies, the cot, the buggy and all the other baby essentials – endless patience? – are all accounted for, a smart baby monitor is fast becoming the next must-have item on the list for new parents. |
